Again and again, over and over, Iowa astonishes me. The overriding thought I had learning of the vote in the New York State Senate today was: but in Iowa, marriage is legal for same-sex couples. Iowa.
Dar Williams knows it.
Rabbis James Stone Goodman and Susan Talve know it. So do the Saint Louis couples who traveled to Iowa to be married.

Several hundred people gathered peacefully outside the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis at midday Sunday to protest the discretionary spending of Archbishop Robert J. Carlson in support of efforts to deny civil marriage rights of same-sex couples in Maine. The gift of $10,000, donated by Saint Louis Catholics to a fund traditionally used by Archbishops for things such as disaster relief, came at the request of Archbishop Richard Malone, of Portland, ME.
Today's gathering at the Cathedral questioned that spending at a time when the needs of the poor and disadvantaged in Saint Louis are so great.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has an amazing photo archive online: photos of Saint Louis in the 1930s, when residences and businesses here were still burning ‘soft’ coal mined nearby. The air quality was amazingly bad. Unbelievably bad. Off the charts bad. The photos are fascinating.
